Per a recent bulletin from the USDA, school districts must update 'wellness policies' in 2016-17 to promote healthy eating and physical activity. This is a great opportunity to establish a School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) instead of a school wellness committee that focuses only on PE and nutrition. Additional topics that a SHAC could review include Comprehensive Sexual Health Education, campus safety and LGBT bullying prevention, transgender student policies, parent outreach and release of students for reproductive health care. All of which can be funded by Mandated Costs Reimbursement, LCAP, or the district's Mandate Block Grant.
